STEMcx virtual math tutoring program provided support for Baltimore City families during a pandemic which  caused all Baltimore City schools to transition to virtual learning. Virtual learning for many students is  a struggle and families have found  themselves unsure of ways to support their children, especially in the subject of mathematics. The program began in October 2020. For ten weeks, 28 students from over 13 different schools received free tutoring sessions twice per week .

13 college students from 8 different colleges, including Coppin State University, Johns Hopkins University, University of Maryland, Baltimore, and Brown University volunteered to tutor students. Tutoring sessions were held via Google Meet. When tutoring sessions were not taking place, tutors and students were able to communicate via Google Classroom.Using Google

Classroom students were able to share homework assignments, test results, and ask their tutor questions even when they were not in an actual tutoring session.

Families sang great praises about the tutoring program. So far 10 tutors and 21 students have committed to returning to the tutoring program in January 2021. Families are excited and eager to see their child's continued progress. Six new families has signed up for tutoring in January and the interest from families and schools has continued to grow.

STEMcx has partnered with The Shriver Center at UMBC with hopes of adding more tutors to the program so that no student is left with out support.

"Two of my older kids have been working with Ms Ellen Guilan for almost a month. She is very professional, understands the materials especially in the area of Math and Language Arts. My son, David struggled with reading and pronunciation but now he is reading more at his free time and looks forward to his tutoring sessions.
The older child, Sonya was a bit resistant to the tutor idea but now she is grasping the concepts of Algebra and Geometry more. Ms Ellen is very passionate, and able to work within the space of both children. Thank you Ms. Ellen,Thank you STEMcx for this opportunity."
