Among employed adults with a bachelor’s degree or higher, blacks are just 7% and Hispanics are 6% of the STEM workforce. At the same time, STEM jobs are growing faster than any other U.S. sector. Available jobs in the field are set to increase 17 percent between 2014 and 2024, while non-STEM employment will grow just 12 percent.

Our programming hopes to change that. Our primary event is a once every two year day long conference called STEMcx offered for free to middle school through high school students in underrepresented communities in Baltimore. This conference is free and includes workshops and an expo. Keynote speakers have included Dr. Freeman Hrawbowski, President of UMBC, Astronaut Robert Curbeam and last year Stephanie Hill, VP at Lockheed Martin. A parent seminar and a two day teacher workshop are also held concurrently. Other activities include field trips, video contests, interviews and virtual experiences. We have a STEMcx quarterly newsletter, Facebook and Instagram accounts and a mail list. We use all these avenues to advertise STEM events all over the state and nation for our students. This includes opportunities for mentorships, internships and other STEM experiences.
